In 2023, American Indian or Alaskan Native students made up 0.7% of all postsecondary enrollment in the United States. In Washington State, for all 6 of the public 4-year colleges and universities combined, there are less than 1,000 American Indian or Alaskan Native students enrolled of 137,000 total students.

Raised in the reservation town of Mission in Northeast Oregon, Lindsey Pasena-Littlesky is not just a student, she’s also an athlete, a dancer, a sibling, a daughter, and a young woman. She’s grown up walking the line between the two worlds that have been woven into her identity for as long as she can remember. As she begins her journey into adulthood, these two worlds continue to pull her in opposite directions, one pulling her back home to a life of cultural practice and preservation, the other pulling her away from home to a life of Western culture and education. Sky is a story of seeking balance, of needing balance, after being thrust into an entirely new environment.

This film was conceived, filmed, and edited in the Southeast corner of Washington State in a little town called Walla Walla. An hour's drive from her hometown, this place has become Lindsey’s new home as a college student. The surrounding area that we know as the Walla Walla Valley also bears another name: Pášx̣apa. And in the heart of Pášx̣apa lies a story that you won’t see everyday. 


About the Project

Oliver Dickson, Riley Cooper, and Annalie Reed are all students at Whitman College in Walla Walla Washington. This is their first ever documentary short.
