FML was created as a part of the Canadian Film Fest Comedy Igniter 2024, co-run by the Firecracker Department. The Igniter challenged female and nonbinary filmmakers to write, shoot and complete a short film in the span of a month, based on prompts provided. The Igniter's goal is to encourage female and non-binary comedians and filmmakers to have their voices heard and stories seen. 

About the Project


Jessica Hinkson is an award-winning independent filmmaker whose films have garnered numerous international accolades. They have been broadcast on CBC, Amazon Prime, Super Channel, and Highball TV. In 2021, she was honored with the Women in Film Screenplay Award at the Oscar-qualifying HollyShorts Film Festival for her film SARA. Some of the highlights of her career include being a multi-Stowe Story Labs alumna and founding Hello, Darling Pictures. She is also part of the prestigious Women In the Director’s Chair Story and Leadership Program, where she is developing her first feature, Concrete Marshmallow, in partnership with C’mon Mort Productions.

Thea is a Toronto-based, queer producer and writer who has been working all over the TV/Film industry for over a decade. She helped produce 3 seasons of sketch comedy series, TallBoyz for CBC, as well as short films ranging from vampiric drama to dark comedy. Currently she develops several original series with Kids in the Hall comedian and writer, Bruce McCulloch. 

Jess and Thea worked previously together on Jess's short film, Sara.
