Every year, around 13 million hectares of forests are burned or cut down worldwide. Forests benefit all living beings through their invisible yet vital role as carbon storage. Simply by keeping them alive, these ecosystems help us mitigate climate change.

However, environmental policies that initially aim to protect forests often face continuous setbacks from the moment they are implemented.

In Spain, on July 21, 2015, a reform of the Forestry Law effectively removed the 30-year ban on modifying the land use of burned forests. This ban, introduced in 2006, was meant to deter intentional wildfires aimed at converting forested areas into urban developments. The legal modification—described by the press at the time as the "dismantling of our legal framework"—gave regional governments the power to reclassify burned land and change its designation, opening the door to its exploitation.

"Where Trees Weep" plays with the expectations of the crime thriller genre, unofficially granting the forest a human identity—and, with it, the possibility of being murdered.

The forest becomes both the witness and the victim of its own tragedy, with its presence and voice-over guiding us at the beginning and end of the story.

Can a burned mountain in Spain be legally reclassified and urbanized? The answer is yes.
Can a short film raise awareness and push for legal change? We hope the answer will also be yes.
